Give the Gift of Foreign Language

We are reaching out to you to support the wonderful foreign language program we have at our school.

PS 85Q has partnered with Global Language Project for this effort. We need $13,000 to serve nearly 300 Kindergarten and 1st grade children this spring. Help us reach our goal!

Why foreign language? Numerous studies have revealed that children who study a foreign language:

  • • Perform better and produce higher scores on standardized tests.
  • • Show greater cognitive development in such areas as mental flexibility, creativity, divergent thinking and higher-order thinking skills.
  • • Develop a sense of cultural pluralism.
  • • Improve their self-concept and overall sense of achievement in school.

But the U.S. educational systems lags behind in preparing children to be proficient in a foreign language:

  • • 21 of the top 25 industrialized countries begin the study of world languages in grades K-5, while the majority of U.S. students begin studying a second language at age 14.
  • • 80% of students in Europe speak at least two languages.
  • • Only 14% of U.S. students consider themselves bilingual.

The worst of these cases occur in underserved communities around the country, where public elementary schools do not or cannot afford to provide courses for languages other than English. PS 85Q is a Title 1 schools with a 69% poverty rate. We want to give all the children at our school the opportunity they deserve.

Foreign language fluency gives children access to many possible careers and society benefits by enhancing global communication and improving economic and political relationships.

Please make a tax deductible donation to the foreign language program PS85Q Parents’ Association via paypal. It’s safe and easy. Click on the donate button below.

PS85Q Parents’ Association is a federally registered 501C3 non-profit corporation. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Thank you for your support. Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of so many deserving children.
